Andaman Travel Guide

Island Afterglow

Catch a quiet beach at dusk, then discover the magic of glowing waters.

The Andaman Islands change beautifully as the sun begins to set. The bright blues of the day soften into warm shades of gold and orange, beaches become quieter, and the gentle rhythm of the waves creates a peaceful atmosphere.

For many travellers, this is the perfect time to slow down, find a quiet stretch of sand, and watch another day come to an end. But when darkness arrives, the islands still have one more surprise to reveal. On selected nights, tiny marine organisms known as bioluminescent plankton light up the water with an enchanting blue glow, creating one of the most unforgettable natural experiences in the Andaman Islands.

From spectacular sunsets to glowing shorelines, the islands offer an evening experience unlike anywhere else in India.

Chidiya Tapu, Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram)

One of Andaman's Most Beautiful Sunset Points

Sunset at Chidiya Tapu near Port Blair

Located about 30 kilometres from Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram), Chidiya Tapu is one of the most popular places to watch the sunset in the Andaman Islands. Surrounded by lush forests and dramatic rocky shores, the viewpoint overlooks the Bay of Bengal, where the setting sun paints the sky in shades of orange, pink, and crimson.

As daylight fades, the peaceful surroundings become even more captivating. The gentle sound of the waves, the silhouettes of distant islands, and the cool evening breeze create a relaxing atmosphere that attracts photographers, nature lovers, and couples alike.

For visitors spending a few days in Port Blair, an evening at Chidiya Tapu is an experience well worth including in the itinerary.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

Sunset, Starlit Skies and Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence and starlit skies on Havelock Island

Evenings on Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) have a special charm. Watching the sun disappear beyond the horizon at Radhanagar Beach is an experience in itself, but on certain nights, the adventure continues after darkness falls.

During favourable conditions, particularly on moonless nights, parts of Havelock's coastline come alive with bioluminescent plankton. As the water is gently disturbed by waves, paddles, or your footsteps near the shore, thousands of microscopic organisms emit a soft blue glow, creating a magical effect that seems almost unreal.

This natural phenomenon is best experienced during guided night kayaking tours through calm mangrove creeks or along selected coastal stretches where artificial light is minimal. Since bioluminescence depends on weather, tides, and seasonal conditions, every sighting is unique, making the experience even more special.

A Rare Natural Phenomenon

Bioluminescence is created by microscopic marine plankton that produce light when disturbed. Although invisible during the day, they transform the water into shimmering shades of electric blue after sunset under the right conditions.

The glow is entirely natural and cannot be guaranteed on every evening. Factors such as moonlight, water movement, weather, and plankton concentration all influence visibility. This unpredictability is part of what makes the experience so memorable. Every successful sighting feels like discovering one of nature's best kept secrets.

Evenings to Remember

The Andaman Islands offer much more than beautiful days. As the pace of the islands slows after sunset, a different kind of beauty begins to emerge. Whether you're watching the sky change colours at Chidiya Tapu or quietly paddling beneath a starlit sky in search of glowing waters around Havelock Island, these peaceful moments often become the memories travellers cherish the most.

Sometimes the most extraordinary experiences don't happen in bright daylight. They begin when the sun goes down.
